Ecoliv Buildings would like you to meet Australia’s most eco-friendly family, The New Joneses as they move into Federation Square for the Sustainable Living Festival 2014.
The New Ecoliv Display home which will be transported to Fed Square next week for the New Joneses Project.
The New Joneses is a social experiment like no other. An eight star energy rated Ecoliv Building will be hydraulically lifted into Federation Square with Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew living in the Ecoliv Buildings home from the 10th-14th February. This will form part of the Sustainable Living Festival held at Federation Square, with an open house for the public on the following weekend of the 15th and 16th of February. Bartholomew will live in the most eco-friendly and sustainable way possible, with a minimal waste lifestyle that will educate Sunrise viewers and Federation Square visitors about energy efficiency, the second hand economy and reducing food waste. She will drive a Nissan electric vehicle and purchase her fruit and vegetables direct from farmers to reduce carbon emissions and transport costs.
The Ecoliv Buildings home in Federation Square will demonstrate how prefab homes can significantly reduce household energy use with solar power and water saving features that minimise our consumption. This helps Ecoliv Building owners to reduce greenhouse gasses and utility bills into the future. Ecoliv Buildings incorporates a unique approach to the design, construction and operational practices that significantly reduce the negative effects of development on the environment making each home as sustainable as possible both now and in the future.
The New Joneses’ home is decorated with ‘up-cycled’ home wares and furniture from Leonard Joel, and Bartholomew will be wearing clothes sourced from Sacred Heart Mission second hand stores. All this without compromising on style. The house features a composting system, ‘green wall’ vertical herb garden, grey water recycling system, a vegetable garden and its very own hen house. Edwina won’t be the only person in on the fun, with local school kids touring the house, gathering fresh eggs provided by the resident chickens and feeding them with kitchen food scraps. Kids will learn how to repurpose existing goods and think about where waste goes before throwing it away.
This is the first time Ecoliv Buildings has supplied one of their buildings for The New Joneses and the entire team is excited and humbled by seeing their work on Australia’s number one breakfast show, Sunrise. This project challenges Australia to keep up with The New Joneses’ sustainable lifestyle and do more with less waste, so we can preserve our resources for future generations.
