In an era where sustainability has become a baseline expectation, Ecoliv is pursuing a regenerative business model. As an organisation at the early stages of adopting regenerative practices, we believe it is crucial to provoke thought and explore why more businesses should join us in going beyond mere sustainability. We delve into the significance of regenerative business models and how Ecoliv is striving to implement best practices.

The Limitations of Sustainability: While sustainability is important, Ecoliv recognises the need to transcend its limitations. Rather than solely focusing on minimising harm, we are committed to actively restoring and revitalising ecosystems. By shifting the conversation from sustainability to regeneration, we acknowledge the urgency of reversing environmental damage and inspire others to take more proactive measures.

Ecoliv is committed to supporting and being part of significant industry change through transparent and ethical practices. Our business was certified Climate Active in 2021. Climate Active certification is awarded to businesses and organisations that have credibly reached a state of achieving net zero emissions, otherwise known as carbon neutrality. We are serious about addressing climate change and are committed to sustainability, innovation, and industry leadership.

Holistic Ecosystem Approach: At Ecoliv, we firmly believe in the interconnectedness of businesses and ecosystems. We understand that a healthy environment is vital for long-term prosperity. As we embark on our regenerative journey, we embrace a holistic approach that considers the interdependencies between ecological, social, and economic systems. This approach fosters resilience for our business, communities, and the environments we serve.

In 2022, Ecoliv was certified as B Corp, which measures a company’s entire social and environmental impact. And achieving B Corp certification confirms that Ecoliv is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency in areas such as from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.

Sustainable Materials and Construction: Ecoliv specifies sustainable and low-impact materials in our construction processes. We prioritise responsibly sourced timber and strive to select products with a low life cycle impact and a range of eco labels including FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), GECA (Good Environment Choice Australia) and Global Green Tag to minimise our ecological footprint and support the regeneration of natural resources.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: We design and construct energy-efficient buildings, reducing energy consumption and reliance on fossil fuels. Ecoliv incorporates solar panels and other renewable energy technologies to generate clean, sustainable power. By embracing renewable energy sources, we contribute to reducing carbon emissions and supporting a more sustainable energy future. Ecoliv specifies all-electric buildings. We omitted gas appliances well before the recent Victorian Government announcement to ban gas connections to new homes by 1st January 2024.

Waste Reduction and Recycling: Ecoliv implements waste reduction strategies throughout our construction processes. We aim to minimise waste generation and maximise recycling and reuse of materials. By diverting waste from landfills and promoting recycling practices, we conserve resources and reduce environmental impacts associated with construction activities.

Ecoliv modular designs are designed in increments to limit offcuts of materials, greatly reducing landfill waste. Our construction facility and display centre located at The EcoHub plans for a future workshop where offcuts can be used for community woodworking projects.

Regenerative Landscape Design/Community Engagement: We understand the significance of taking into account the surrounding landscape while shaping our designs. Our goal is to unlock the full potential of the natural environment while also ensuring minimal disruption to the site and its surroundings. With The EcoHub community garden project, we're committed to incorporating the principles of regenerative landscape design. This involves using native plant species, setting up rainwater harvesting systems, and crafting habitats that promote biodiversity.

The soon to be constructed community garden project will include Biofilta wicking beds and indigenous bush tucker. Upon completion of the project, we aim to actively engage with local communities, fostering awareness and education around regenerative practices.

By promoting community involvement, we aim to create a ripple effect of positive change and inspire others to adopt regenerative practices.

Continuous Improvement and Collaboration: We believe that the journey toward regeneration is an ongoing process. Ecoliv continuously assesses our practices, seeks innovative solutions, and collaborates with industry partners, researchers, and experts to expand our knowledge and refine our approaches. By embracing a mindset of continuous improvement, we strive to stay at the forefront of regenerative design and construction practices.

Ecoliv's efforts in adopting regenerative business models showcase our commitment to creating a thoughtful impact. Through sustainable materials, energy efficiency, waste reduction, regenerative landscape design, community engagement, and continuous improvement, we demonstrate our dedication to going beyond sustainability. By provoking thought and leading by example, we aim to inspire other businesses to join us on the path of regeneration.
